The summer of 2024 marks an exciting milestone as The Stayton at Museum Way becomes the seventh senior living community in Texas owned and operated by Buckner Retirement Services.
The Stayton is a natural fit with Buckner Retirement Services, based on the aligned missions of both nonprofit organizations and the quality of life Buckner offers at our other senior living communities, including Ventana by Buckner in Dallas.
Welcoming The Stayton into the fold gives Buckner an opportunity to extend its passion for service excellence to seniors in the Fort Worth area, building on the local foster care and adoption services already provided through Buckner Children and Family Services.
As the only Life Care community in Fort Worth, The Stayton at Museum Way has been providing peace of mind for older adults and their families since 2011. Buckner Retirement Services looks forward to the opportunity to support and enhance this beautiful, culturally rich community.
Buckner’s Deep-Rooted Heritage in Serving Seniors
Buckner Retirement Services’ faith-based history goes back nearly 150 years. The ministry sprang from the vision of Pastor Robert C. Buckner and was launched in Dallas in 1879 as a complement to the Buckner Orphans Home.
Small houses were built near the children’s home to give pastors and missionaries a place where they could retire with comfort and dignity. In turn, these devoted individuals served as loving, surrogate grandparents for the children in the home.
Buckner’s First Official Retirement Community and Subsequent Growth
In 1954, Buckner opened its first designated retirement community, the Mary E. Trew Home, less than a mile from the original orphans’ home.
The ministry expanded to Houston the next year, with the opening of Buckner Baptist Haven, and Buckner Retirement Services continued to grow its presence throughout the state over the following five decades.
The Mary E. Trew Home became known as Buckner Retirement Village in 1966 when the Buckner Ryburn Nursing Center was added. Although the long-standing Dallas retirement community was closed in 2016, a year later Buckner broke ground on its first high-rise senior living community, Ventana by Buckner, just 10 miles from where the original orphans’ home had been. That community opened in 2019.
Now the Largest in the Lone Star State
Today, with the addition of The Stayton at Museum Way, Buckner Retirement Services is the largest not-for-profit senior living provider in Texas, serving more than 2,000 older adults across the state each year.
Each of our communities is designed to live up to Buckner’s mission of Inspiring happiness® and includes every level of senior living and care:
- Independent living
- Assisted living
- Memory care
- Long-term care
- Rehabilitation therapy
- Respite care
Although Buckner Retirement Services’ presence throughout Texas has increased, our faith-filled commitment to providing seniors with dignified living and expert care has remained steadfast since our humble beginnings. And while our roots are based in faith, we are in service of all people, regardless of religion.
How The Stayton and Life Care Dovetail with Buckner’s Mission
The Stayton at Museum Way and Buckner Retirement Services have always been nonprofit organizations, which means the revenue we receive for services and housing is reinvested to improve our communities.
Some senior living communities are for-profit organizations and, as such, are obligated to give a percentage of their revenue to investors or other stakeholders. As a not-for-profit entity, we can focus our efforts and resources on making our communities better for those who live there.
Life Care Supports One of Our Core Principles: Security
A Life Care community, such as The Stayton, is a type of continuing care retirement community that helps seniors prepare for the future by ensuring their care costs remain predictable, even if life brings unexpected challenges.
Typically, residents of a Life Care community pay an entrance fee before they move in (which may be partially refundable), as well as a monthly fee that covers the cost of services, amenities, activities and, in some case, meals and utilities. Some Life Care communities, including The Stayton, make funding available to residents who exhaust their financial resources and need assistance down the road.
Being part of a Life Care community helps residents relax and fully enjoy everything available to them, knowing they will have priority access to on-site assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care and rehabilitation support, should they need advanced care later on.
Along with offering financial stability, Life Care communities help ensure residents can remain in familiar surroundings, near their friends and neighbors — even if they eventually need to transition to a different level of care.
More Buckner Core Principles
As noted earlier, security is one of the five promises Buckner Retirement Services makes to every resident in each of our communities. Our other core principles are:
- Service – Associates in every Buckner senior living community are pleased to assist residents and help make them happy. To them, it’s more than a job. It’s a mission.
- Independence – We make a point of encouraging residents to maintain their individuality and independence. We even develop personalized strategies intended to give them as much control over their lives as possible.
- Purpose – Having a purpose adds value to one’s quality of life, and that can be especially true for older adults. Residents in Buckner senior living communities have an abundance of choices for finding new purpose every day.
- Connection – The importance of staying connected with others cannot be overemphasized. Our communities offer countless opportunities to connect, from meeting new friends to volunteering at one of the many community organizations we partner with.
